I love space! Now, by no means am I an astronomer. I’ve never sat in a science class of any sort and fully understood what’s going on. I get confused just reading the Wikipedia pages dedicated to our solar system.
Today, I spent about two hours watching TikToks about our solar system. Did you know that Uranus is almost completely tilted to its side? Or that on Neptune, it rains diamonds? Venus has a thick layer of clouds made of sulfuric acid that prevents us from really being able to see its surface from satellites!
Despite my general confusion about the universe and how it even came to be, I do understand how lucky we are to even be alive. The cause of the Big Bang is still unknown! Earth is still the only planet that we know has life. So many little things had to go exactly right for mankind to even exist.
Jupiter is thought to be the oldest planet, but it is still a gas giant that is completely incompatible with life. Venus’s air pressure would crush any living thing, and if life somehow survived the weight, the temperatures of around 900℉ would scorch it alive. Mars is seemingly the planet most compatible with life, and yet we still haven’t found any water there.
Earth has experienced five mass extinction events, and here we are! Life has formed, evolved, and been destroyed five separate times! The fact that I’m typing on my MacBook to post on a website and promote said website on Instagram is so unbelievable, especially when you consider that the first organisms ever just had water, sunlight, and vibes.
I’m not the person to teach anyone about the history of the universe. I just think that when the world feels crushing, demoralizing, and inhospitable, it’s nice to think about how far we’ve come. It should serve as encouragement that we are even conscious enough to have loved ones and care about them! It’s simply wise to appreciate that life is absolutely miraculous!
